When a tooth gets badly damaged and cannot be repaired by a filling or treated for a root canal, a natural looking crown can be put in it’s place to restore the surface of the tooth to a natural look and repair functionality. It is also an answer to back molars that are causing you constant pain or sensitivity due to cracks in the tooth or compromised fillings.

Essentially a crown is a cover or “cap” that we can put on your tooth. The crown restores the tooth to its normal shape, size and function. The purpose of the dental crown is to make the tooth stronger or improve the way it looks. It is also a practical and long lasting solution.

Dental crowns can help restore your smile if you have missing or have any damaged teeth which can help restore some confidence that you may lose when you have damaged teeth that need repairing. A crown can also help you bite and chew better, which can positively impact other systems in your body, such as your digestive system.

Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?

You may need a crown if you:

If you have any questions as to whether you are a good candidate for a dental crown, Dr. Kapoor and our friendly team can help and give you the information and advice you need.

What is a Dental Crown Made From?

Crowns are made from several types of materials. Metal alloys, ceramics, porcelain, composite resin, or combinations of these materials may be used. In the process of making a crown, the material is often colored to blend in with your natural teeth.

We want to create a crown that looks natural and fits comfortable in your mouth. To decide on the material for your crown, we will consider the tooth location, the position of the gum tissue, your preference, the amount of tooth that will show when you smile, the color or shake of the tooh, and the function of the tooth.

How is The Crown Placed?

Several steps are involved, and two dental visits are generally needed to complete the treatment.
  1. Dr. Kapoor will prepare the tooth by removing its outer portions so the crown will fit. Any decay is also removed. If additional tooth structure is needed to support the crown, the dentist may build up the core of the tooth.
  2. An impression is then made to provide an exact model for the crown.
  3. You will get a temporary crown while you wait for the permanent crown to be ready - usually less than two weeks. While you have the temporary crown, this tooth may be a little sensitive to hot and cold. Also, avoid chewing gum or sticky foods during this time.
  4. We will use the model to help make the crown.
  5. When the new crown is ready, Dr. Kapoor will place it in your mouth and make the necessary adjustments. When you and and Dr. Kapoor are satisfied with how it looks and feels, the crown is cemented in place.
