If you have multiple teeth are missing from an upper or lower arch, or are completely edentulous (toothless) in one or both arches, dentures may be your best option. A consultation in our Shawnee, Kansas dental office can give you the information about various treatments and help you make the right decision.

Dentures can be fixed (attached in the mouth via dental implants) or removable (created to be inserted in the morning and removed and stored outside the mouth in a special solution at night.)

A properly customized and fitted set of dentures can restore function for chewing, smiling, and speaking; improve nutrition and meal enjoyment; increase self-confidence and self-esteem, and provide a better aesthetic appearance for the entire face and jaw.

Most dentures are made using acrylic as a base, with the “teeth” crafted from plastic, porcelain, or a combination of the two materials. Upper dentures cover the palate (roof) of the mouth, while lower dentures are horseshoe-shaped to allow the tongue freedom to move.

Your denture will be designed to evenly distribute chewing forces and allow for a correct bite. A correctly designed and worn denture should allow for normal talking and chewing and will present a natural looking appearance.

The Process:

Dentures require multiple visits to our Shawnee, Kansas dental office. If any extractions need to be completed, this is done first and the gums allowed to heal. A precise mold will be made of your mouth, and a smile designed that will fit your mouth and fill out your lips and cheeks naturally.

If dental implants will be used to secure the dentures, these will be installed and allowed to become fully seated and secure in your jaw. You may be given temporary removable dentures to use while your mouth is being prepared for more permanent dentures.

The final denture(s) will be fabricated and you will return to the dentist for fitting. The dentist will show you how to insert and remove your dentures if they are removable. If they are permanent, the dentures will be secured to the implants.

Multiple follow-ups may be required to adjust your dentures. Removable dentures may require the fabrication of additional soft liners to help them fit more comfortably. As your mouth changes shape over the years, dentures must be relined to conform to the new shape of your gums and provide maximum comfort.

An annual examination will be required and an oral scan done routinely to check for any cancerous or precancerous lesions. Dentures should be brushed daily with a soft nylon denture tooth brush and denture cream, rinsed with cold water, and (for removable dentures) stored in a denture cleaning solution when not in use.
